Ethnicity and Hotel Babylon

  • Most ethnic groups shown in the clip are clear.
  • People from different ethnic backgrounds are shown as having different interests, personalities, attitudes and behaviours and this is shown through the way they react in a given situation such as when police come looking for the immigrants.  Some are helpless, scared, some pray showing that religion is important.
  • Ethnicity is represented as being important in their life.
  • people from particular ethnicities are portrayed as being better such as white people. Black people are shown to be less powerful. Asian people are shown to be intelligent.
  • Black people are shown as being weaker then others.
  • Other characters in the clip treat the characters from different ethic backgrounds as being less powerful and less intelligent as white people are dominant and narrow minded having a strong representation.
  • The message the clip is trying to portray about ethnicity is that they all stick together and that white people are more powerful.

Point/technical feature:
1.Mise en scene-clothing
Higher status people with high paid jobs are shown to be wearing smart clothes such as suits who are mainly white people with the rest being Asian compared to the other ethnic groups who are shown to be wearing work clothes that are simple that show they have a lower status.

Connotations: White people- more status then other ethnic groups and they get better jobs then them. An example of a high paid job with power is manager compared to the jobs black people have such as the manual jobs are shown wearing simple clothing. It also suggests that other ethnic groups other than white are all the same. It suggests that other ethnic groups are inferior.

This is stereotypical for ethnicity as white people are seen to have more power then other ethnic groups and are also seen to have higher status jobs then black people.

2. Point/technical feature: Facial expression
Throughout the extract there are clear facial expressions.
Connotations: White people have facial expressions suggesting they are friendly and willing to help and an example of this is the receptionist. Other ethnic groups appear to have fearful and distressed. The main detective has a powerful look when he walks in.
Representation: This is stereotypical for British peoples views on other ethnic groups as we see them as not as friendly as we are. We also appear to be more powerful then most ethnic groups suggesting that other ethnic groups are slightly more fearful.

3.Point/technical feature
Lighting
The lighting changes between showing white people and other ethnic groups for example where the immigrants are hiding the lightings dim compared to where the immigration walks in.
This connotes that white people are more important and are of a higher status so need to be seen more by the bright lighting.
This is stereotypically for white people as they are generally seen as being more important then a majority of ethnic groups.

Point/ technical feature
Sound
1.The music when white people are introduced at the start of the extract suggests power. It has a strong beat and suggesting power. It is non diagetic. It is also loud representing the attitude of the ethnic group. As the people get closer to the desk the music speeds up and gets louder.

Connotations:
This connotes that white people are powerful and intimidating with strong attitudes.

This is stereotypical of white people as they are seen to be more powerful then other ethnic groups having control over them aswell as being strongwilled.

2. The music played after the cleaner has been taken and the smartly dressed women who is looking through his stuff is non diegetic. It is also has less of a beat than the rest of the music and it also suggests something sad has happened. It continues for quite a while through the immigrants praying who didnt get taken away.
It connotes sadness due to the cleaner being taken away. It also connotes a sense of vulnerability which  is stereotypical for ethnic groups.

3. Dialogue which a diegetic sound is used throughout the extract. An example of this is the immigrants shouting suggesting they are panicked and scared. This connotes that the ethnic groups really do not want to be caught and are scared of being sent back to their country. This is stereotypical of immigrants that are illegal as they will do anything they can not to go back to their country and they fear that they will.

4. Where the immigrant cleaner is listening to music the sound is diagetic.
It connotes that immigrants are ignorant and don't pay attention to the things around them and in this extract the immigrant officer possibly suggesting that immigrants are slightly stupid as they are unaware of dangers. This is possibly stereotypical for some ethnic groups as they are seen as ignorant.

Point/ technical feature
Camerawork
1.When the cleaner gets taken away by immigration an over the shoulder shot is used of the white men connoting power as it focuses on the person with the most important speech or the person that is dominant. The cleaner is only shown in the corner of the shot which suggests that the white people are more superior as they have the power to take him away and send him back to his country. The cleaner is listening to music and is completely oblivious as to what is happening around him making him appear vulnerable to the white men.
This is again stereotypical as white people are dominant.

2.When all the immigrants are standing in the room before the women faints zoom is used. It starts zoomed in to the people at the back and then zooms out to show all facial expressions and body language with all of them appearing fearful. Most of the people are praying showing how important their ethnicity is to them as they are forced to hide away.
This connotes that immigrants are intimidated by white people and that their ethnicity is important to them.  This is stereotypical again as white people have more power and other ethnic groups to tend to be intimidated by white people.

3.Point/technical feature
Panning shot and arc shot.
In the cafeteria where the immigrants  are praying or doing other activities which represents their ethnic group appear sat on three tables and a panning shot and arc shot are used to capture this.
This connotes that ethnicity is important in their life and so is their religion and culture. Ethnic groups are also shown to be respectful and caring.
This goes against the stereotype of other ethnicities having bad intentions as they appear to respect each other and are like a family.

4. Point/ technical feature
Tilt
A tilt is used in the extract where the diabetic women collapses and she is lying on the floor with the Asian women next to her. This connotes that the diabetic immigrant women needs help and is dependent on another person for help. This also suggests that ethnic groups depend on each other which in some cases is seen as stereotypical however not for all ethnic groups.
